Today's post is going to be short. I just wanted to vent about my problem with finding corn for grinding. Ever since we got our grain mill I've been itching to grind anything that I can get my hands on. I did go to Whole Foods hoping they'd have corn for me to mill, but they didn't. All they had was popcorn! They did have soft white winter wheat, but I like my hard red winter wheat. A local grocery store also has regular (not organic) hard red winter wheat for .59 cents per pound! That makes me happy.
Anyway, since I couldn't find regular dried corn for grinding in 3 different grocery stores, all of them having those bulk bins, I decided to just get a pound or so of hominy corn kernels. I'm going to try grinding that, and maybe making hominy grits. The search for corn is still on, though, and if I just can't find any, I'm going to have to grow them myself.
We're planning to purchase seeds from Baker Creek and Southern Exposure. They've got the Bloody Butcher and some other hybrids of corn so that's what we'll try next year. I'm a tomato fanatic and I can get them to grow, so we'll buy a bunch of tomato seeds too.
So, I will just have to stick to grinding wheat berries or rye for now, although I really wanted to make my own cornmeal. Today I'm also going to try out my meat grinder - woohoo! I think I have an obsession with grinding objects into smaller pieces....
