Projects

My most recent project that I need to complete within the next few months is making crepe paper flowers. I've practiced making some coffee filter flowers using techniques gleaned from a Martha Stewart online tutorial video, but I think I'm going to try some real crepe paper flowers using thick crepe paper (which I have to order still!). I failed a bit on the first flower because I'd never used floral tape before, so my rose head was literally falling off the stem. After that fiasco, I learned to pull gently on the floral tape as I wrapped it around the base of the second rose head. It would've helped if I were using a cloth-covered stem, since I was a beginner (and still am! ha!). Anyway, once I get started on more flowers (I'm thinking, carnations and itty-bitty buds next time) I will put pictures of the flowers up. Here are some of the supplies that I'm going to need for this project.

  • Crepe paper (doublette and florist crepe, which can be found at CastleintheAir. I think they supply high-quality paper, or so I've heard, so I'll try them first. Shipping isn't too bad, either.)
  • scissors
  • glue
  • cloth-covered floral stems
  • floral tape
  • maybe some beads to give a bit of "flare" to some of the flowers' centers
  • some watercolors
  • patience!

I'll have to get serious about purchasing the crepe paper and cloth-covered floral stems (wire) within the next couple months!

You might have realized that my crepe paper flower project is for our wedding. We're having an inexpensive wedding but we still get some of the "showiness" that most people want when they get married. I purchased my handmade dress and bolero on Etsy, and I'm going to buy my shoes and veil supplies from Etsy sellers, too.

Our budget is $1,000, including ceremony venue, cake, and ceremony officiator. Can we do it? I'll let you know next year when the event happens! In the meantime, you'll see lots more "projects" on this page detailing some of the things I'll be making for the wedding, such as the flowers (which includes my bouquet as well as groom's boutonniere), my birdcage veil, and even my jewelry. Stay tuned!
